Time Well Spent

I just returned from taking the three girls to our family cabin in McCall, Idaho. We were gone for 10 days without Mike.

It was a glorious, memorable trip - filled with fun and successes. Each moment held together by a common thread called "I asked, I was given and I received help".

First of all, my mom's sister, Kathie watched Daphne and Maisie for 6 hours the day before I left, so that I could clean and pack at an almost empty house (now a days one napping Ruby is a piece of cake). When I picked up the girls that evening, having accomplished so much and knowing they had been so entertained - I felt the blessing of family with a grateful heart.

Then, the day we set out on our long trek, we stopped at a half-way mark to spend the evening and night with my mom's other sister, Sue, my uncle Les and their youngest child, my sweet cousin Kayla. They fed us, entertained us (at their town's outdoor swimming pool), and fed us again the next morning. I stayed up late and caught up on life with them and remembered respecting them as a young girl and now still respecting them as a grown one. Driving away, I once again felt so blessed and loved.

When we finally arrived in McCall, exhausted from two back-to-back LONG hauls, we were greeted by my loving, giving mother-in-law, Pam. She had a cake waiting for us and lots of fun plans in the works for the girls. Even though the weather did not cooperate the weekend we spent with her, I didn't care. I'll take a fire in a fireplace any rainy day - winter or summer! It was so good to be at the cabin with the girls and enjoy it with Pam. She took them on special one-on-one dates, and spoiled us to meals out and a trip to the ever so warm hotsprings. And she was there when I just HAD to go back to bed at 9am in the morning after a rough night. When I usually would have just kissed the day goodbye, I got a refresher. Then, the night before she left, she called a cleaning lady to come in when my trip was over, so that I wouldn't have to clean bathrooms and mop floors at 12am the night before we had to leave! Needless to say, when we sadly said goodbye to her, we all felt doted on and loved.

For a day and a night and most of the next day, I got to enjoy the cabin alone with my girls. We were lazy. And when we tried doing the unlazy, like grocery shopping...it was really hardwork, but rewarding all in the same breath. And at the end of what was a long day of mothering, I enjoyed watching a movie and falling asleep on the couch all alone that night. I felt safe and loved by Him. And as we prepared for MY mom's arrival, with Daphne as our leader, we were like a little party committee. I felt like a young mother hen, loved by her little chicks.

Then for the bulk of our trip, I got to enjoy my charges in a focused way. We picked huckleberries (daily, sometimes thrice daily), we took walks (daily, sometimes thrice daily), and picked all the flowers in arms length, we cut out pictures from old magazines, I baked cookies and muffins and ate white bread, we read books, watched only a little tv, and I swam in the lake with all three of my girls despite the initial shock of the cold water each time. I got muddy feet, and berry stained hands, mosquito bites all over my body, and not the best sleep, which is common for a mom on vacation. But I went to bed each night feeling very tired, but for the BEST reason. The day had been purposeful. In all of my bedtime prayers I thanked God to be feeling such joy with my kids.

And one of the major contributors behind each of these activities was my mom on the sidelines. I took walks with just Daphne, and just Maisie, and just Daphne and Maisie, etc etc. Why, because mom was there to allow me the freedom to give extra attention. I felt safe swimming way out far with Daphne, because mom had Maisie and Ruby back on shore...or she could hand me Ruby from the end of the dock when she was reaching for me. She let me sleep in one morning, or maybe I just shoved them out my door that morning, saying, "Go find Grandma, she's up already." I took a nap on the couch one afternoon too, a really unnecessary sort of slumber - but she ushered the kids to the other room when she saw my eyed closed. And she jumped in with dishes and led many an art project and didn't seem phased when they left a pile of cut up magazine pictures in their wake. She mothers my mothering in a supportive, non-threatening, beautiful way.

Her help made the week doable and enjoyable. And her companionship in the midst of all the mundane, made our relationship stronger and so very meaningful. A full circle moment. I even added crossword puzzles to my repertoire, and got to watch her watch the movie August Rush for the first time ~ we loved our movie time!

We have been home now for 5 hours (after her and I made the 10+ hour voyage home). Once again a success. Not fun, but accomplished nonetheless.

This time away, made me remember how to love myself a little more. I'm so grateful to all those that love and HELP me too. And I'll try to hold onto my McCall lessons, because I think that's the path God wants me on...it's a path well walked upon - tennis shoes on the ground, no cell phone service available - it's a path where I stop and pick the berries and the wild flowers, where I make art messes that don't have to go in the trash right away, and one where there are people a mile back and a mile ahead that are ready to pick me up when I fall or get lost!

Shell Seekers

My mom was blessed with a big family. She has two brothers and two sisters. And then the blessing multiplied when all five of them had kids - my generation. There are a lot of us...when my grandfather passed away, the most moving part was when my uncle read all of our names, from the first granddaughter to the youngest great-grandson. What a heritage my grandmother and grandfather created. The best part about being one of the names read amongst all the others, was the "being a part of" all the names read. We are close.

Now, we're all grown and at different stages in our lives for sure and living in different states too. But we have these memories that are like glue - the best kind of glue around. The kind that all good relationships are bound together by. It all revolves around time spent together - purposeful, sacrificial, mostly fun, sometimes crazy...but all carved away for meaningful time.
This is a long awaited written thank you to my mom and my aunt Sue and my aunt Kathie for giving us kids the gift of time.

Every summer, they took all of us kids to the beach for a whole week - a week without dads (they were working) and my uncles' kids joined in on the fun too. Now that I have kids, whenever I tackle a vacation with them, I think of our times at the beach. When I take my kids to the coast, I feel great to get them down on the sand for an hour or so. My aunts and mom let us play for hours on end....And through the years we experienced a lice outbreak, sunburns, emergency trips, no water (they took us to a hotel to shower and the public bathroom at the beach access to go to the bathroom)...water balloons off the upper deck, a punched in wall when we wrestled a bit too hard and the list goes on. But "the moms" never seemed derailed by it all. I'm in amazement at it today.

Now a days we squeeze in a day or weekend trip, and whoever can join in the fun is welcome. We had one of those days yesterday. The memories were right there at our fingertips as we picked up each shell on the sand, in our laughs as we recalled funny moments, and above all in our hearts - the hearts that will always be held together by sand, saltwater and three sisters that made it happen.

I love you all!

Catching Up

Although I haven't blogged lately, we definitely haven't stopped living here - quite the contrary actually! I have lots to share and I don't know where to start! So, I think I will do a "review style" post for my memory and to keep any readers I have apprised of our goings ons.

The first graduation attended was that of my mom's private kindergarten class. All of her
grandkids (and daughters) came to join in on the picnic at a local park. I was so proud of my mom and the ministry she created 26 years ago...a private preschool at her church. She added the kindergarten 2 years ago when she retired from public ed. It was a blessing to watch all the little kids in the program singing, "He's got the whole world in His hands..."
In the picture above, she has all my girls in her hands (if not physically, definitely emotionally)
Then Daphne graduated from preschool herself!

Even as her mom, it's a toss up of who's cuter - Daphne or her teacher Mrs. Thompson!

Daphne and a great pal/classmate/carpoolee.
Some girlfriends out for a morning hike and reflective time.
Not the best picture of me, but a great memory made that day!
This is my friend, Candi - - how could I resist this picture, and then sharing!
Pink is her "signature" color:)
Side Note - I know a few Candi's now....and they all have red hair.

First ever block party - a rockin success!

How adorable and special is this picture for the albums??!!!!

If I was writing more about this activity, I would press you to do the same
in your neighborhoods. It's an endangered pasttime...but we found that it was enjoyable,
appreciated, and really valuable.
Softball is my favorite thing about life right now. Can you
by Maisie's dirt smeared face, that I'm not the only one enjoying it???!!!
I love that we all are PLAYING outside.

A better picture of our girl - she really doesn't have buck teeth - yet, anyway!

Today I caught a ball that was crushed out to the outfield and right into my glove.
Since it may never happen again, I decided to do a little victory dance.
I couldn't help myself and everyone seemed to enjoy it too:)

A New Endeavor

This year when Mike said he had been asked to play softball on our church's summer coed team, I had a choice to make. Either I stay at home with the kids, like the whole rest of my week, OR I join in on the fun. The latter seemed the best idea...but definitely involved (and still involves some fear). You see, I have never played, except for pe and in the backyard at my Grandparent's house with my brother and boy cousins...and that was with a wiffle ball and fat bat. But, tonight we had our first game. I hit the ball on the first pitch each of the three times I got up to bat. The first pitch I made it to first, and then someone else got me all the way to home. There was some major cheering happening by my fellow players and mostly inside my beating heart! The other times I got OUT, but at least I made contact, eh?!

I was SO nervous, but I think this is going to be fun! The girls have really been enjoying their time playing with all the kids during practice and even during the game today!

It's definitely better than being at home, while everyone else is out having a "ball"! (sorry, had to say it!) Even if I am not super star softball player - it's a lesson in bravery and go-for-it-ness!

Look at our fancy uniforms - I even have a #!

Talking about that fear...I hurt my finger really bad at my first practice -

I was warming up with the coach, of all people...and I this finger got totally smashed.

If I had been practicing with Mike, I would have hit the ground in pain, but I just shook it off and whined later at home!

It's almost back to normal now. Just my first sports battle wound!

Just Ruby

Don't we all know if Ruby had been our first child, there would be a lot more pictures of just Ruby. But she's a lucky girl with two sisters who adore her and share in most of her pictures. Still, I have to remember to capture her alone - as she grows up right before our loving eyes.
This was Daphne's dress, then Maisie's dress, and now Ruby's. It's one of the
rare "hand me downs" that I still adore! (cute on all girls, it will go in Maisie's special box - see her 2 year old b-day post and you will know why!)

Always smiling little girl...mommy is now deciding between cutting your bangs again or letting them grow...
You inherited some of my curls, at least for now!
Age: 17 months
A new top from good ole Target...although I am making you wear

so many worn out play clothes, all girls need something brand new every once in awhile!
